No. Burning fat locally is not possible. Ab workouts do burn fat like other exercises do. But they don't specifically burn fat around your waist. Should you do ab workouts, then? Absolutely! How else would they get stronger? Just remember to approach fat-losing with a holistic concept. For how to lose fat, refer to this blog post that I wrote a couple of months ago. 2. The leaner, the healthier. No. The "ideal" male body fat percentage is 12-15%. For females it's 16-25%. Any lower than these, you'll like experience negative effects such as low testosterone levels, disrupted sleep, and mood swings. Health is a comprehensive concept that includes cardiovascular health, organ health, flexibility, joint well-being, mobility, and many more aspects. 3. It's beneficial to stretch the body before workouts. Yes, you should always do stretching. But we have to be very specific. There is dynamic stretching (arm circles, walking lunges, high knees, etc.) and static stretching. Remember, always do dynamic stretching before and static stretching after strength training. It doesn't do you any good if you do it the other way around. 4. More cardio equals more fat-loss. No. Gaining muscle is a more effective way for losing fat as it increases your metabolism rate. I understand that although quite a lot of you have a dedicated gym in either the garage or a room, many are limited when it comes to workout space either by choice or for other reasons. So, I have decided to share a few tips on how to maximize your workout gains even if you only have a few dumbbells and a bench in a limited space. 1. All 3 fundamental exercises, deadlift, squat, and bench press, can be performed with dumbbells. Don't be discouraged if you are serious about your gains but don't have the space to accommodate a power rack to do barbell squats, etc. You CAN make serious gains with dumbbells. 2. Dumbbells require more coordination than barbells. The two limbs operating independently means that it requires more stabilizing and coordinating effort to complete reps with dumbbells. This actually means that more stabilization muscles and core muscles are engaged. 3. Range of motion is greater with dumbbells. This is fairly obvious: for example, you can lower the dumbbells much lower in a bench press that a barbell. 4. Form is more flexible and potentially more natural with dumbbells than barbells. Without the constraint of the straight shape of the barbell, you can adapt the motion according to the natural movements of your body. However, correct form is still paramount, especially in preventing injury. 5. Your load limit is lower with dumbbells than barbells. Barbells are inherently more stable than dumbbells. If you always find yourself tired or sleepy and can't seem to get enough rest for your muscle recovery despite sleeping for 8 hours a day, be aware that this might be the cause. Possible symptoms include: loud snoring that is often punctuated by gasping or choking sounds, dry mouth upon awakening, restless sleep with periods of wakefulness during the night, and so on. A pentagon fight between the richest man and one of the richest men on earth? There have even been videos of them each training with elite fighters. Apparently fighting skills are not something you worry less about as your wealth accumulates. I myself am an martial arts enthusiast. And this week, I'd like to share a very important lesson that I learned from my years of training. True force does not come from your fist or your foot. It comes from what's behind your fist or your foot. My realization of this came from one thing that my trainer said:"When you kick, think of your leg as a whip, with the force focused on the tip." Then it became so obvious to me: the force of the kick comes from the momentum generated by the twist of the entire body, which then is transmitted all the way to the foot. The same is true with punches: the true force comes from the ground. It comes from the the foot pushing the ground, transmitted all the way to your fist. This goes beyond martial arts. For example, pro level singers don't sing with their vocal cords only. Instead, their vocal cords are strongly supported by diaphragm breathing, and strongly resonated in various cavities in their bodies. Their vocal cords are their fists or feet, which are focused with the energy generated in their entire bodies. So, whatever walks of life y'all are in, I want y'all to remember this, internalize this and really apply this in your lives. Different Perspectives on Training That You Should Be Aware Of There are different perspectives you can take to view and select training exercises to develop not only a good-looking physique, but also amazing overall fitness. This week, I'd like to share 3 of them with you. 1. Functionality vs Aesthetics Do you train to look better, or to perform better in everyday life? Or maybe both? I encourage people to become aware of this distinction of purposes in order to consciously combine the two approaches. The reason is that if you only train to look good without even being aware of it, you may ignore critical functional exercises such as deadlifting, squatting, and pull-ups. What are they gonna do for your 6-pack, right? But in reality, your overall fitness gained from these compound exercises can do a lot for your aesthetics. On the other hand, if you focus solely on functional training, and ignore muscle isolation exercises completely, your physique may not turn out to be the way you imagined it. 2. Pure Strength vs Explosive Power Have you ever watched an Olympic lifting competition or a Strongman competition? The two types of athletes lift in quite different ways. In fact, they grab the barbell at different positions. While at a Strongman Competition, deadlifts (in slow and controlled motion) are performed to gauge an athlete's absolute strength, the Olympic lifts (snatch and clean & jerk) are fast and explosive. Again, this doesn't have to be an either/or situation. You can develop both aspects of your strength by doing multiple exercises including squatting, deadlifting, Olympic lifting, Plyometric exercises, medicine ball exercises, etc. 3. The 3 Planes of Movement They are: A. The sagittal plane (red in the picture below, imagine dividing the body with a glass inserted vertically to the face). Exercises along this plane involve forward and backward motion. They include squatting, deadlifting, bicep curls, etc. B. The frontal plane (blue purple in the picture, imagine dividing the body with a glass inserted parallel to the face). Exercises along this plane involve lateral motion. They include dumbbell lateral raises, cable crossover, side plank, etc. C. The traverse plane (green in the picture, imagine dividing the body with a glass inserted vertically to the waist). Exercises along this plane involve rotational motion. They include rotational wall ball throw, Russian twist, etc. source of image: Wikipedia Becoming aware of this specific information helps you view your training and physique in a more 3-dimensional and comprehensive way, thereby designing a better-rounded training program for yourself to achieve better results. Brand Manager Eric shares 11 fitness lessons from his personal experience of training. He also understands the impact music has on our workouts and recommends a rock song. Tip of the Week: Super lean and cut physiques like Zac Efron's in Baywatch with single-digit body fat percentage can give you hormonal imbalance, low energy, low libido, bad sleep quality, irritability, etc. Be fit, and be healthy. 11 Fundamental Fitness Lessons I Wish I Had Learned Sooner Hi, Brand Manager/Chief Writer & Editor Eric here. How's your week been so far? Are you 1 step closer to your fitness and health goal? This week, I'd like to share the 11 fundamental lessons that I wish I had been taught when I was just starting out on my fitness journey. 1. One rep using correct form > doing nothing > 100 reps using bad form (especially with heavy weights). Good form prevents injury and targets the correct muscles. Training with bad form equals victimizing your body. 2. The importance of stretching couldn't be emphasized enough. Don't jump straight into the shower after a workout. Stretch your body, especially the muscles that you just worked. Also, do stretching on a regular basis. Or you risk your muscles becoming stiff. 3. Over-training is real and should be avoided. I really thought that training the same muscles every day would make them grow faster. Naive! Give them 48-72 hours to recover. They need time to repair the torn fibers! 4. Muscle growth doesn't happen in the gym. It happens in the kitchen and the bedroom. The 3 pillars of muscle gain: training, nutrition and recovery. Too often, beginners such as myself back in the days only focus on training. Get at least 7 hours of quality sleep a day! 5. Micro-nutrients are equally important as macro-nutrients. Once I learned of the importance of nutrition, I started tracking my macros (carbs, protein, fat) like crazy. It was only later that I became aware of my micro intake such as vitamins and minerals. I once watched a YouTube video where the uploader prepares a week's meals, rations them into Tupperware and puts them into the freezer to save time. The meals consist of nothing more than rice, chicken breasts, and broccoli. Oh, man! 6. Get a training partner to feed off of each other. We can be lone wolves with our minds completely focused on our goals. But the reality is, a training partner can spot you, give you pep talks, and uplift your spirit when you are down. 7. If you can lift no more than 70 lbs, lift no more than 70 lbs. Ignore judgement or mockery, especially from within yourself. I did myself such a big favor by putting my ego in alignment with my capabilities. And yes, there was snickering about how light I was lifting. It did affect me. But I'm glad I learned not to let it. 8. Don't ever focus less than 100% during an exercise. (I learned it the hard way) Long story short, I was deadlifting, and got distracted by my own thoughts. My back was injured. It got so bad that I had trouble lying on my back. Fortunately, it was nothing too serious. But I've never made the same blunder again. 9. Information should be scrutinized and analyzed in a logical way, especially in the era of social media. There is so much contradicting information on the internet nowadays. We should know better than to blindly follow an influencer's advice on Instagram. Think critically to tell information from misinformation and value from junk! 10. Be clear about your goal, but dissect it into smaller goals. This would have saved me from many days of frustration and depression over the fact that I wasn't making any significant progress. But I was right on track! 11. You don't need much to get started. But once you get to a certain level, good equipment does make a difference. Start with whatever you can get your hand on. You will know it when you've outgrown your equipment. This also tells you that Flybird as a brand will be upgrading our equipment, too. We grow with you. Around this time of the year, I would often reminisce on the time that I have or have not spent with my Dad. They say "Don't feel regret. It all happened for a reason". Although I do believe in that, I do feel regret, too. I regret not keeping that wooden sword my Dad made me. When I was in elementary school, I was really into martial arts. Can you relate? Hooked on the flashy moves, I really wanted a sword. I guess that's just how kids are. My Dad didn't really say anything about that. Or about anything that I did or said. He would just go into his workshop after work like he always did. He was a restless one, always ready to try something new. One day, after school, I got home, and there was a brand-new wooden sword hanging from the cupboard. The sight of it was not to be missed. It was about 2 feet long, a gorgeous brown/auburn color, coated with varnish. I can't remember what the pommel looked like, but red and white plastic bands were wound around the grip in beautiful crossing patterns. I was stunned. I never thought my Dad paid much attention to whatever stupid thing I was obsessed with. But apparently, he did. I had the sword along with my other toys for many years, often playing with it. But then we moved, and it was lost with the other toys. I really don't want to dwell on the past too much. Instead, I focus on the present and the future. I try to spend as much time as I can with my Dad, lifting weights with him, spotting him, playing basketball with him, traveling with him, and talking about his hometown and what interests him. I guess I am a bit mad at myself for not holding on to that sword. Because I can just imagine him peacefully chiseling the wood, thinking about his son. I cherish that. But now I just want to do my best to keep him healthy. There will still be plenty of time with him. That's my story. Believe it or not, this is the first time I have ever told it.
