However, saying that everyone needs to drink precisely 8 to 11 glasses of water a day is not entirely true. Oh yeah, call us myth-busters! Why? Recommendations based on the number of glasses of water per day, while a useful guide, are only a rough estimate. You may be at the lower or upper end of this spectrum, depending on many factors such as age, gender, weight, activity level, medications you are taking, and the altitude and climate of your location. For example, someone who didn't sweat much and ate soup and watermelon (water-rich foods) should certainly drink fewer glasses of water than their friends who ran a marathon in hot weather and ate only dry foods like dried fruit and crackers. How do you know if you're drinking enough water, if counting glasses of water isn't the best way to go? Here are three tips that can help¹: Check your thirst: You should not feel like your mouth is dry. These are signs that you are already dehydrated. Check your mood: If you feel like you're about to get a headache and you feel tired, it could be a sign of dehydration. Check your urine: It should be clear colored. If it starts to look dark yellow and smell strong, it is an indication that you are not drinking enough water. When you are well hydrated, you can better regulate your body temperature, keep your joints lubricated, improve your overall health by preventing infections, improving the transport of nutrients in your body and the functioning of your organs². What are the best strategies for staying hydrated? Drink small sips of water throughout the day rather than drinking a large amount at one time. In addition, eat water-rich foods at every meal and include adequate amounts of sodium and potassium in your diet, two electrolytes that help you stay well hydrated. In addition, soaked foods, that have a higher fluid content than their counterpart, can help you increase your fluid intake from food. Today, we’re proud to announce that our longtime supporter Jeff is now officially joining our ambassador program. Hailing from Vancouver, B.C., she is just as passionate as us about well-being, adventure, and creating a life well-lived. We sat down with Annie to learn a little bit more about her so you can get to know her, too. 🌱 "My role at HOLOS is so fun - I get to create spaces for our incredible community of enthusiasts to connect with each other, learn, and achieve their goals. Our customers come from all walks of life, but they are all passionate about their health and being better versions of themselves today than they were yesterday. I am so excited to be a part of this community of amazing people! 🤗 I grew up on a very small island off of the coast of British Columbia (so small that I had to take a ferry to school on the mainland every day) 🍁! I didn’t appreciate it then, but being constantly surrounded by wild nature sparked an intense passion for the outdoors that I’ve continued to feel for the rest of my life. And being a part of such a tight knit, safe community made me appreciate the power of connection as a force in everything I do. I am close with my family, and I deeply love my friends and connecting with new people who inspire me. After graduating with a degree in Psychology from the University of Victoria, I moved to the big city of Vancouver BC, where I continue to seek out generally non-indoor passions like skiing, sailing, and hiking,- as well as bigger adventures that push me out of my comfort zone 🌊🏔⛷🌲. But I always enjoy these passions more when in good company. I believe that, as humans, we are intrinsically wired to seek out connection - to belong. We are the best version of ourselves when we are a part of something bigger. And that’s what I want to create with HOLOS. It’s not simply about each of us reaching our goals, or getting healthier, or hitting that personal record: It’s about doing it together, and cheering each other on. With this in mind, we thought it could be fun to challenge you to apply this perspective by trying new ways to kickstart your day with our super-organic-overnight-plant-based-muesli! Recipe by future nutritionist, runner and recipemaker @elodiesfood Ingredients: 1 pouch of HOLOS Vanilla125ml of your choice of milk½ cup of frozen or fresh strawberries¼ tsp of cinnamon1 tsp of maple syrup1 tbsp of chopped almonds Method: 1. Prepare your HOLOS overnight as usual. (Pour it in the jar and add milk to the top line.) 2. In a small saucepan, add the strawberries, cinnamon and maple syrup, and mix well. 3. At HOLOS, we don’t believe in starting over. We believe in a refreshed perspective. Holistic health, after all, is about the whole picture: mind, body, spirit, everything that makes us who we are. Today, we’re looking back at what was a banner year for HOLOS and celebrating some of the milestones we reached along the way. After proudly selling to our first US customer in January, we were honored to witness the magical and intensely moving Bromont Ultra in March. For seven days, we documented and supported a father running from New York City to Bromont (689 km) in honor of his son, Noah, who has Down’s Syndrome. The course was brutal: Sam, our co-founder who directed an upcoming film on the feat, described blistering winds, a snowstorm, and charged emotions. But the father, Marc-Antoine Forand, pushed on. “After running 664 km, we wondered if he had anything left in the tank...” Sam says. “But of course he did.” This spring, we were elated to partner with our first Olympic athlete, the Canadian freeskiing legend Mikael Kingsbury, a champion in every sense of the word. And around the same time, our short docu-film “Dancing in the Mountains” won Breakout Film of the Year at the iF3 Mountain Bike Movie Awards. Over the summer, we launched our most popular flavor yet – the creamy, crunchy Caramel + Raisins – that recalls the delicate sweetness of oatmeal raisin cookies. It’s the sort of whimsical, make-you-feel-like-a-kid-again breakfast that you can’t believe is actually good for you (it is, we promise), and it was a hit. By September, we’d officially shipped to every single U.S. state. As the temperatures dropped into fall and winter, we found ourselves returning to our roots. In September, we hosted a kiosk at the Ultra-Trail Harricana, a real-deal 125-km trail-running adventure through Canada’s wild backcountry. And in December, we flew out to California to attend the North Face Global Athletes Summit where we proudly served world-class competitors HOLOS every morning. For a small Quebec company, it was a huge honor to receive a seal of approval from The North Face, a leader in the world of outdoor recreation for more than fifty years. And finally, there’s you. It goes without saying but we couldn’t have accomplished any of this without your loyal support. Thank you for running, climbing, cycling, surfing, laughing, sweating, and smiling alongside us.
