Ever wondered when the first International Women’s Day was, the purpose it serves, or how you can make a difference? Keep reading to find out! When Did International Women's Day Begin? The first International Women’s Day was actually National Women’s Day. Initially, it was only celebrated in the United States! The first observation was in 1909. The early 1900s introduced rapid industrial expansion and population growth across the globe. Civil unrest and critical debate about women’s rights were on the rise, too. What Does International Women's Day Accomplish? International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women around the world! Time To Get Creative In The Kitchen! 🍳
It’s Bake for Family Fun Month & we’re all about bringing kids into the kitchen. Check out these tips from an expert! Hi there, hunter! We often associate February with Valentine’s Day. It’s the month that’s all about love and hearts, pink and red, chocolates, and roses! But did you know that February doubles as Bake for Family Fun Month? Designated by the Home Baking Association, Bake for Family Fun Month encourages families to spend more time together in the kitchen. And thanks to today’s technology, you can discover all kinds of recipes and resources online! Quality Time in the Kitchen It can be intimidating to bring your kids into the kitchen. Aside from the mess they’re bound to make, the kitchen is packed with sharp tools and hot surfaces. Talk about hectic and stressful! The good news? It doesn’t have to be that way. The more you invite your kids into the kitchen, the more pleasant the process will become! Plus, quality time in the kitchen boosts family bonding and offers other benefits: Fun and carefree family time Lessons in teamwork and task delegation Introduction to basic baking and cooking skills Treasured memories that last a lifetime Empowering Kids with Crucial Skills According to Katie Kimball, an expert in teaching kids how to cook, you shouldn’t be searching for that perfect kid-friendly recipe. “Teaching kids to cook is about building skill foundations, not finding the perfect kid-friendly recipe,” she says. When kids are provided with a complete cooking toolbox, they’ll have the confidence to tackle any recipe they want to try. If you teach based on recipes, they might master the recipes—but they’ll likely struggle to advance beyond them. What skills should you teach? Knife safety Knife skills like peeling, slicing, cutting, and dicing Oven and stove safety Uses for different pots, pans, and utensils Basic math and measurement conversion skills Proper cleaning and sanitation methods Tips for Teaching Not sure where to get started? Here are some tips to teach your kids how to navigate the kitchen: Break skills and concepts down into smaller pieces your kids can easily understand. Expect messes. They’re going to happen—and that’s okay! Give your older kids more credit. They’re often more capable in the kitchen than you might think! Keep the kitchen a positive place to be. Be patient, say “yes” more than “no,” and keep calm! For more resources to help your family get creative in the kitchen, visit the Bake for Family Fun website or the Kids Cook Real Food website by Katie Kimball. What Parents Need To Know: Messaging Apps 💬
There’s a whole world of messaging apps out there. What are they & which ones are safe for kids? Hi there, hunter! If you could choose between phone calls, video calls, or text messages, which would you choose? Which would your child choose? Today, there’s a whole wide world of communication and messaging apps out there! Many of them are even available on your child’s Troomi phone. (Only if you want them to be, of course!) Keep scrolling to learn a little more about some of the most popular communication and messaging apps—and whether or not they’re safe for your child! What's the Deal with BeReal? BeReal is an up-and-comingapp that’s committed to authenticity! According to their website, BeReal offers “a new and unique way to discover who your friends really are in their daily life.” This is accomplished by capturing two images at the same time—one with your phone’s front-facing camera, the other with your phone’s rear-facing camera. The catch? There are no filters, you only have two minutes to capture your images, and you don’t know when you’ll be able to capture your images. Click here to learn more about our take on BeReal—and whether or not it’s a-okay for kids! What's so Great about GroupMe? GroupMe allows your child to create group chats without the dangers of online chat rooms! In GroupMe, your child can send messages, pictures, and videos like they can over text. But they can also react to messages, hold group polls, and create calendar events! This messaging app is especially helpful if your child has faraway friends and family. They can keep in touch without racking up your phone bill—those international phone calls and text messages don’t come cheap! You can add GroupMe to your child’s Troomi phone with the Discover Plan. Why is Marco Polo Popular? On Marco Polo, your child can record videos and send them directly to an individual or group. This makes Marco Polo an awesome option for little ones who aren’t text-savvy quite yet! There is a free version available that comes with the basics. You can record and send videos, send reactions to videos you watch, and pause, rewind, and fast forward the videos you receive. With the paid version, you can add fun face filters to your videos, take notes, send live reactions, and more! Better yet, Marco Polo doesn’t collect data from your child. You can add Marco Polo to your child’s Troomi phone with the Discover Plan. The Last Word Whether your child sticks to texts or wants to branch out and try something new, there are oodles of communication options on Troomi phones. Join The Fight Against Human Trafficking 👊🏽
It’s National Human Trafficking Prevention Month! Find out what human trafficking really is & how you can help. Hello, hunter! These days, there are so many outrageous and outlandish holidays that you can’t help but wonder how many of them actually exist. National Tooth Fairy Day? National Public Sleeping Day? (Yes, they’re real.) And because we know you’re simply dying to start preparing your parties—both are honored on February 28th! All jokes aside, it’s refreshing when a meaningful month-long celebration finally rolls around. In fact, we’re in the midst of one as we speak! January marks the beginning of National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. What Is Human Trafficking, Anyway? Human trafficking is the unlawful transportation of people—by force or coercion—with the intent to benefit from their work or service. Human trafficking happens all over the world, including the United States, and can take on many forms: Forced or child labor Domestic servitude Sexual exploitation Forced criminal activities More About This Month First declared by President Obama in 2010, National Human Trafficking Prevention Month has been dedicated to educating Americans about human trafficking—how to identify it, and most importantly, how to prevent it. Every year since that initial observation, each president has continued to prioritize the tradition. Just a few weeks ago, on December 30th, President Biden said the following: “Around the world, human trafficking has stripped nearly 25 million people of their safety, dignity, and liberty—disproportionately affecting historically underserved and marginalized communities. During National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, we reaffirm our commitment to ending this inhumane and immoral practice in all its forms. And as we bring perpetrators to justice, we renew our pledge to help survivors recover and rebuild their lives.” January 11 is @DHSBlueCampaign’s #WearBlueDay! Save the date in your calendars and learn how you can help raise awareness of human trafficking:https://www.dhs.gov/blue-campaign/wearblueday Beyond the White House You don’t have to be in Washington, D.C. to contribute to human trafficking prevention efforts! With a problem as widespread and dangerous as human trafficking, finding a way to help can feel intimidating. What can you possibly do to make a difference? Where do you start? Learn how to identify victims of human trafficking. And if you suspect you’ve run into one, know which questions to ask. Check out these key indicators for help!
